Home Page Blog

A home page is very important to a website. The way the homepage is set up can make or break your website. Appearance, presentation, content and simplicity and very important factors. The colors and fonts you use can catch your readers eye. Presentation and layout of your homepage is very important also. I feel like presentation and simplicity go hand in hand because no one wants to spend more time than they have to looking for what they want. I feel like every homepage should have a contact email address so that if anyone has any questions that information is readily available. I feel like a homepage should have a date posted. It is important for the reader to know how current the information that they are reading is.

Esrock's Lectures

Professor Esrock's lectures were extremely informational. I enjoyed our time with him. He opened our eyes to the ample amount of job opportunities out there for college graduates and also taught us the most effective ways to get these jobs. We discussed everything from internship, resumes and interview tips to personal examples of students he had taught. It was extremely inspirational. He showed us many websites that can help you steer yourself in the right direction for whatever career you decide. Professor Esrock emphasized the importance of internship and job experience during college. Most of the time your internship open the doors for many career opportunities that you may not have otherwise. I think that his lectures were one of the most important lectures I have ever participated in just for the simple fact that many college graduates have no idea of what to do once they have graduated. I am excited to use the knowledge he has shared with us!

Lifespan

Elderly are at an extreme disadvantage when it come to technology period. Most elderly don't want the internet because they don't know how to use it or feel that they have gone all this time without it so why start now. The elderly are unfamiliar with the technologies of today's society, but there is hope. Many websites offer assistance for the elderly to become more acquainted with the Internet. The more knowledgeable you are about any subject the more interested one is. I feel like the more the elderly learn and absorb about the internet, the more open minded they are about using the internet for obtaining information, paying bills etc. Once they learn about how it can make their life easier they will learn to love it.

Interpersonal Communication/Children

Children seem to be the experts in technology today. It is funny to observe a child explain to their parents how to use a computer or an iPod. This shows just how fast paced technology is. Children on the Internet has its advantages, but like anything else in life it also has its disadvantages. Children today can find anything on the internet. Children are at an extreme advantage with the Internet. Their capabilities are endless. They can check the weather, do their homework, and look up useful information whenever their little heart desires! Children and the internet do scare me. For instance, chat rooms; there is no guarantee that you are talking to who you believe you may be talking to. There is no way for parents to monitor who their child is speaking to. Another disadvantage is porn. It is everywhere on the internet and even if you do have child controls on your computer, its inevitable that they will come across some sort of porn.

Health Communication

Health Communication is probably one of the most important aspects of Communication. The health websites I visited are obviously very different than the websites we have been studying. These websites are extremely informational and allow viewers to learn about certain medications, prescriptions, illnesses, risks, and different forms of treatments. As informational as these websites can be, there are some downfalls. Anyone can create a website and con viewers into believing there views and take on any medical issue. There were also health chat rooms which allowed people with specific medical conditions to communicate with eachother and provide support for one another. Health communication is a great way to inform ourselves of the health risks and treatments that are available. Today it is so easy to diagnose yourself when feeling ill. With our technology one can treat themselves when a doctor may not be available with only a click of a button. I enjoyed visiting these websites and now realize how easily it is to be mislead by them.

Organizational Communication

There are few organizations today that do not have a website. In our society today it is a must to have a website to have a successful business in order to reach the maximum amount of clientele and promote your business. A website is an informational advertisement that reaches different audiences that necessarily would not look at your product or business, but just happen to come across your website. The majority of the websites I visited had similar characteristics. Many of them had a "login" button allowing members and participants of the organization to communicate with other members and have access to exclusive materials. Another characteristic that was common had an "about us" button that informed viewers of the organizations past and future. There was also a newsletter link that allowed members and non-members a chance to see what the organization has been doing and it was periodically updated. Websites are a great way for organizations to communicate and inform the public of their goals and plans for the future. It is an excellent way for members and non-members to get involved and participate in several organizations.

Legal Communication

After looking through the provided texts, I have come to open my eyes to truley how many frauds and scams are on the internet. I was always aware they were there, but never really thought about or looked into it. I would get those emails saying "You Have just Won," and while I would normally delete it, there are always those times I think what if I really did! I have really opened my eyes to how easy it is to be sucked into Internet fraud. While looking at the Nigerian fraud I realized how easily it is to fall into one of these scams. This was a good example of how one can seem sympathetic to your readers through the internet. Another website which shocked me was the IFCC, International Fraud Complaint Center. This website informed readers of how much money was actually reported lost because of these frauds. I was amazed at the statistics. There was an astonishing $17.8 Million dollars at a loss because of internet scams. Internet scams are everywhere and seem like they are too large to contain!

Political Communication

Political communication is brought to the citizens every day through the media. Now a days there are so many different means of communication that we are able to get this information through the television, the internet, newspapers, magazines, etc. Getting Politics through the internet has its advantages and disadvantages. Information on the internet is constantly being updated and posted. That has its advantages because we are able to receive the news almost as quick as it occurred. It also has its disadvantages because there leaves great room for error. Where the newspaper has to wait until the following morning to print out the news, and television is edited, the internet is raw coverage news. What I enjoy about news on the internet versus television is that as I was reading the web links, I was able to read many peoples opinion about the subject. Television is very subjective and we only get one view. CMC is updated every hour and allows for many different views to be seen. CMC is an excellent way to view political communication.
